Most estuaries are fished with little effort and lots of relaxation from a small boat. However, many estuaries can also be fished from the bank with equally rewarding results. The Dart estuary is the largest locally and is fed with a large volume of fresh water from Dartmoor. During the winter months the upper areas produce good flounders while the lower areas where the salt water has the upper hand, will produce cole, whiting, pollack and codling. In the summer month’s good-sized ray are often landed along with mackerel, pollack, plaice and bass. Bait: good quality rag worm, (not boxed) squid, peeler crab and lugworm. Tackle: keep it reasonably light unless you are targeting the larger species such as ray and conger. A good quality bass rod and multiplier reel with a fine non stretch line good quality fishing tackle is ideal for most situations.
