Lee Bay, about 3 miles west of Ilfracombe, is one of our more picturesque marks, and easier to fish than the low tide jumble of rocks shown above might suggest. Bigger problems can be parking (in high season) or competition from other anglers, as there aren't too many marks among those snags.
Best parking is at the bandstand (viewpoint overlooking the bay, left hand side) but there's only room for three cars. Walk back down into the village and the bay/beach entrance at the bottom is obvious. Veer left, crossing or going in front of the rocks, depending on the tide. When you reach the narrow sandy beach (just visible above, far left), get fishing.
Lighter gear is more fun, with rotten bottoms for the not-too-frequent snags. Take your pick of the standard sea baits and you'll catch pollack, coalfish, strap conger, pouting, rockling etc. There are dogfish here too, but never in plague proportions and they can reach a decent size. Bass are a little rarer but do show up now and then from Spring through to Autumn. When they do appear, they're usually nice fish around 2-3lb, and there have been fish to at least 8˝ in recent years.
There are plenty of other spots to fish from all around the rocks, especially near the low on a neap, so just get out there and explore!
