Lower Deck in Combe Martin is an easy to fish venue which is sheltered from all but the most northerly of winds. The deck section which can be seen in the picture to the left is only fishable on the big spring tides because you need the depth in the water to get your gear back over the worst of the rocks. A drop net would be a very useful peice of equipment here because even on a big spring tide the water is a good ten feet below.

The venue could be described as a rocky/mixed ground venue as a cast of sixty plus yards will put you onto cleanish ground. Even with the rocks that can be seen in the picture tackle losses are reasonably rare as long as you use a reel with a good retreive rate. Using a pulley rig may also be a good idea to help prevent further tackle losses.

Species wise this venue is a TOP Conger mark. It holds the recently broken Bristol Channel conger record. Other species include Bass, Cod, Rockling, Pollack and most other species you would expect to find in season. Combe Martin is also renouned as a specimen Mullet venue.

Baits to use will depend on what your hoping to catch but i have had most of my success with peeler crab, mussle and mackerel. Other baits known to work include worm baits and squid. Most baits are available from North Devon Angling Centre (01271-889123) which is just up the road (300 yds) and open from 7 till 7 seven days a week.
